Discover Molecular Mechanisms utilized during Learning and Memory
My group focuses on how synapses remodel their protein composition in a site-specific manner in response to changes in neuronal activity. Specifically, we study how NMDAR/mTOR signaling shifts the regional distribution (i.e. soma, dendrites, axons, etc) of proteins through changes in protein trafficking, local protein synthesis, or protein stability. We seek to understand the ways in which dynamic changes in ion channel and receptor density may influence synaptic integration and the threshold for neuronal firing. Furthermore, we want to discover how these cellular mechanisms are manipulated in mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
